10 Songs To Show The World Your Undying Love of Cheesecake
Cheesecake is an enduring subject in popular music that manages to transcend eras and genres but remains under the sonic radar. It’s sometimes employed as a metaphor for sex or success, and it is used in the literal sense just as often because eating cheesecake is really just that wonderful.
As a DJ with an insufferable sweet tooth and an extreme love of music trivia, it was a pleasure to create a Spotify playlist called Cheesecake Choons (which you can listen to below) and to pair each song with a recommended cheesecake for you to eat to the beat.
Dexter Gordon, “Cheese Cake” (1962)
Even if the name is unfamiliar, you may actually recognize the melody of this lively and oft-covered jazz standard from the late tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon, the “Sophisticated Giant” who was 6’6”. Match the gait of this song with a slice or three of bouncy Japanese soufflé cheesecake.
Louis Armstrong, “Cheesecake” (1966)
A true classic, this song by Queens native Louis Armstrong about a sweets-loving girlfriend is best enjoyed with a slice of — what else? — New York cheesecake.
Aerosmith, “Cheese Cake” (1979)
Gotta have one cheesecake-as-sex-song in this playlist, so why not consult the ultimate rock creeps? A big, bricklike slice of bodacious Hungarian cheesecake seems like a sound accompaniment.
King Missile, “Cheesecake Truck” (1990)
Whip up a batch of chocolate-covered cheesecake popsicles for this humorous food truck tune from the band behind some infamous Nineties cult songs that have names too naughty to mention here.
FOHX, “Is That Strawberry Cheese Cake?” (2020)
A producer from Dubai shows his affection for an American classic. It’s probably best to go literal here and get some strawberry cheesecake.
Hadiya Love, “Cheesecake” (2017)
Countless rappers have used cheesecake to represent getting money, but no one has done so in a more infectious manner than Chicago’s Hadiya Love, whose video for “Cheesecake” went viral when she was just 11-years-old. Find the most decadent slice of chocolate cheesecake you can for this one.
Honeycomb, “Cheesecake”
The favorite cheesecake flavor of Future, the Atlanta rapper whose interview is sampled here, is the standard “original.” But if you haven’t tried a slice of cheesecake with honeycomb candy mixed into the batter and crumbled on top, you may have to stop what you’re doing and make your own.
The Sands Family, “The Cheesecake Song” (2008)
Try pairing an Irish Cream cheesecake with this sweet and calming folk song from Northern Ireland. Cheesecake is love, and you can hear it here.
Ian Post, “Cheesecake” (2020)
A composer, producer, and pianist from London, Ian Post created a bubbly pop take on our theme that we envision with a slice of Champagne cheesecake — served in a Champagne glass, of course.
Füete Billete, “Cheesecake (Skit)” (2020)
A trio from Puerto Rico that specializes in hard beats softens up and has a lighthearted, wistful moment about cheesecake. Finish off this playlist with a hearty section of flan de queso and a smile on your face.
