Decolonizing Cheese

When you think of Mediterranean countries, do you think Italy, Spain, and Greece? Historian and Daphne Zepos Teaching Award winner Ann Campell takes a post-colonial approach to cheese and wants you to broaden your view of the Mediterranean to include places such as North Africa and Western Asia.

Campbell shares some of her research into the agricultural history of the Mediterranean, and the Arab influence of European foodways with a closer look at white brined cheese.

Each year the Daphne Zepos Teaching Award goes to a professional who teaches about the history, culture, and techniques in making, aging, and selling cheese. The scholarship funds travel and living expenses. The winner returns to share their learnings with the cheese community — at the annual American Cheese Society Conference and beyond.
